How to be Storm Ready: Your Guide to Tornado Preparedness

How to be Storm Ready: Your Guide to Tornado Preparedness

Tornadoes, those swirling columns of destructive wind, can strike quickly and leave a devastating path. But preparedness can significantly increase your chances of staying safe. Here’s what you need to know:

Tornado Watches vs. Warnings:

  • Tornado Watch: This means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. Stay informed and monitor weather updates closely.
  • Tornado Warning: This means a tornado has been spotted or radar indicates imminent danger. Take immediate action to seek shelter!

Signs of an Approaching Tornado:

  • Dark, greenish-black clouds: Look for a lowering, rotating cloud, often accompanied by a wall cloud.
  • Large hail: This can be a precursor to a tornado.
  • Loud roar: A train-like sound can indicate a nearby tornado.
  • Debris swirling in the air: This is a sure sign a tornado is touching down.

Staying Safe During a Tornado:

  • Seek immediate shelter: The lowest level of a sturdy building is best, ideally a basement or storm cellar. Avoid windows and doors.
  • Get away from outside walls and windows: Interior rooms on the lowest floor offer the most protection.
  • Cover your head and neck: Use your arms, a blanket, or other protection.
  • Do not stay in a mobile home: They offer little protection and are prone to being flipped by tornadoes.

Staying Safe After a Tornado:

  • Stay indoors until the storm passes: Flying debris can still be a danger.
  • Check for injuries and administer first aid: Help others if you can safely do so.
  • Beware of downed power lines: Do not touch them or anything they are touching.
  • Report damaged gas lines or fires: Call your local authorities immediately.
  • Document the damage: Take photos and videos for insurance purposes.

Additional Tips:

  • Develop a family tornado plan: Know where to go and what to do in case of a warning. Practice drills regularly.
  • Assemble a disaster kit: Include water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, medications, and a battery-powered radio.
  • Stay informed: Sign up for local weather alerts and follow trusted sources for updates.

Remember, early preparation and quick action are crucial during a tornado. By following these tips, you can significantly increase your chances of staying safe and weathering the storm.
